2010 Municipal Election
Election News
The Good Government Act, 2009 was passed by the Provincial Legislature in December of 2009. This Act made several amendments to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 which will impact the 2010 Municipal Election.
Some of these amendments are as follows:
- Election Day is now the fourth Monday in October. For the 2010 Election this will be October 25, 2010.
- Nomination Day is now September 10, 2010. Nominations will be accepted until 2:00 p.m. on this day.
- Proof of identification and residence will now be required before an elector receives a ballot. Without identification an application followed by a statutory declaration of identity will be required.
- Candidates with a surplus will be required to forward that surplus to the Clerk.
- Contributions to a single candidate can be to a maximum of $750.00 A contributor cannot donate more than $5,000.00 to all candidates within a single council or school board jurisdiction.
- Candidate financial statements are to be filed by the last Friday in March. For the 2010 election this would be March 25, 2011.
- Supplementary filing, for candidates extending their campaign to erase a deficit, is now the last Friday in September. This will be September 30, 2011 for the 2010 Election.
- There will be only one six month extension period for filing.
