Back with 2 dates in 2024!
On Sunday, May 26 and June 23 from 10 am to 2 pm, King Street East (from John St to Gage Ave) will be closed to vehicle traffic and opened for residents to walk, cycle, roll up and down the street.
The street will be transformed into additional public space with physical activity stations & other activities.
Open Streets brings our city together to enjoy car-free streets filled with activities, fun, and community spirit. Join us as we reimagine our streets as vibrant spaces for everyone to explore, connect, and celebrate! Background on Open Streets
Open Streets are programs that temporarily open streets to people as additional public space, closing them to cars. These events typically have a family-friendly festival type atmosphere but are not organized as festivals. The first one was conducted in Bogota, Colombia in 1974. The Cyclovia (translated to “Cycle-way”) closed major streets to vehicular traffic on Sundays, and still runs today with 122 km of roadway included in the program. Hamilton has successfully run Open Streets-style events in the past, including on James St. North.
Open Streets is a program of the City of Hamilton, in partnership with Environment Hamilton.
