Students, teachers, school/childcare staff and visitors should self-screen for symptoms of cold, flu, and COVID‑19 every day before going to school. If a child/student or staff is having any of the following symptoms, they should not attend school or childcare:
- Fever – Stay home until the fever is gone and the child/student/staff is feeling better for at least 24 hours
- New or unusual respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, runny nose, stuffy nose, sore throat, and/or shortness of breath) – Stay home for at least 24 hours
- New or unusual stomach symptoms (e.g. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) – Stay home for 48 hours after symptoms have stopped
You can also use the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 screening tool if you or your child has symptoms that may be COVID-19. The results will tell you:
- If you should go to school or stay home
- What to do next
Masking
While masking is not required within schools, schools and school boards can continue to encourage mask use for individuals based on their own risk assessment. Individuals’ choices regarding masking should be respected, and schools and school boards are encouraged to promote welcoming and inclusive environments.
Masking is recommended for 10 days from the first day after symptoms of a respiratory illness begin when returning to school. For more information, please see the COVID-19 – Recommendations section of this webpage
