Opioid
Fake OxyContin Possibly Circulating in Hamilton
Over 2000 pills were seized by Hamilton Police Services (March 2024) in relation to a search warrant. The pills were stamped “TEC” and appeared to be OxyContin.
- The pills were tested by Health Canada and were found to contain a benzimidazole (nitazene). Nitazene opioids can be significantly more potent than fentanyl and are highly dangerous when mistaken for fentanyl or other opioids.
- There is concern that the pills are currently circulating in the community and would be mistaken for OxyContin.
- In the event of a drug poisoning several rounds of naloxone may be needed to respond.
