Morning Fire Causes Extensive Smoke Damage at 1275 Rymal Road East
HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 1275 Rymal Road East, Hamilton at approximately 9:22 a.m. this morning. Upon arrival firefighters confirmed smoke conditions at the east side of this large one storey commercial building which housed several businesses including a food packaging operation for Fortino’s supermarkets. This was then upgraded to a multiple alarm structure fire which brought additional firefighters to the scene to assist in the firefighting operation.
Firefighters entered the area occupied by Fortino’s and located a well involved fire in a rear cardboard storage area. The buildings sprinkler system had activated and with an aggressive interior attack the fire was quickly knocked down with no fire spread into the other commercial units. The fire caused heavy smoke damage to the unit which is used for storage and preparation of food items for all of Fortino’s Supermarkets. The City of Hamilton Heath Department was requested to attend because of food items being exposed to smoke. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or the public.
Damage to the area occupied by Fortinos has been estimated at approximately $255,000 which includes approximately $230,000 in food products. The cause of the fire is undetermined and the Office of the Fire Marshal has been contacted to assist with the cause determination.
