Monitoring Wastewater Overflows and Bypasses
In older areas of the City a combined sewer system collects both storm water and wastewater. During heavy rainfalls or snowmelt, combined sewers carry large volumes of storm water that can exceed their capacity.

Sewer & Drain By-law Review
The City of Hamilton is currently undertaking a review and update of the Sewer and Drain By-law. These revisions aim to modernize the content by aligning with current practices, including industry best practices, and City policies.
The Sewer and Drain By-law is used to regulate the installation, use, maintenance, and repair of Sewers and Drains in the City of Hamilton.
Highlights of the Sewer and Drain By-law Update
- New By-law Item: Required Disconnection of Downspouts
- New By-law Item: Sewer Lateral Cross Connections
- One Parcel: One Lateral (sewer laterals are the pipes that connect individual properties to the main sewer system)
- Added ‘Administration & Enforcement’ and ‘Penalty’ sections to the By-law as defined by the appropriate sections of the Municipal Act, 2001
