Date September 19, 2026
Time 9 am to 1 pm
Hamilton Municipal Cemeteries remains committed to introducing the new Family & Pet Section at Mount Hamilton Cemetery, providing families with a unique opportunity to honour the special bond shared with their beloved pets.
Due to ongoing construction activities within the cemetery and the additional infrastructure work required to prepare the new section, the opening of the Family & Pet Section has been delayed. As part of this process, updates and amendments to the Cemetery By-Laws are also required to ensure the section operates in compliance with provincial legislation and industry regulations governing interment rights, pet interments, and cemetery operations.
These by-law updates are an important step in establishing clear policies and procedures that will allow us to offer this innovative new section while maintaining the highest standards of care, dignity, and service for families.
Our team is actively working through both the construction and regulatory requirements and looks forward to sharing further details, including an anticipated opening date, as soon as they become available.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community as we complete these important enhancements. The Family & Pet Section represents an exciting addition to Mount Hamilton Cemetery and will provide a meaningful and lasting place of remembrance for both family members and cherished companion animals.

A Final Resting Place for the Whole Family
At Hamilton Municipal Cemeteries, we recognize that pets are cherished members of the family. The Family & Pet Section at Mount Hamilton Cemetery provides a peaceful and dignified place where families may be laid to rest together with their beloved companions.
This dedicated section offers a range of burial and cremation interment options designed to honour both human family members and their pets. The section has been thoughtfully developed in accordance with provincial guidelines and cemetery regulations to ensure respectful and appropriate interment for all.
In Ontario, cemeteries may permit pets to be buried with their owners when the cemetery bylaws allow it and when the burial takes place in a designated area for combined human and pet interment.
The Family & Pet Section provides families with the comfort of knowing that the bonds shared in life can remain together in a permanent place of remembrance.
A popular choice for cremation interment, our granite columbarium in the Pet & Family Section offers beauty and elegance combined with a secure place of inurnment. A columbarium is a permanent, above-ground structure that includes many spaces or niches for cremated human and pet remains. Interment of cremated remains allows for two human cremations and up to 6 pet cremation interments. The size of the niche will regulate the number and size of urns allowed.
Expecting a limited opening of the section in late Fall 2026 the Hamilton Municipal Cemeteries will be the first and only cemetery operator in Ontario to provide a space where family members have the option to share a final resting place with their cherished pets (Burial and Cremation Interments are allowed).
We have created a dedicated section at Mount Hamilton Cemetery for human interment and pet interment with both traditional burial and cremation options available.

If you have interment rights in a human only section of the cemetery, you can still have your pet buried in the Pet and Family section. If you do desire to be with your pet, there are options available to have your interment rights transferred to the Pet and Family section and our staff can explain what that process looks like and the associated costs.
