Highland Gardens Park is an existing 3.2 hectare (8.7 acre) neighbourhood park located at 55 Hillcrest Avenue, Hamilton (Ward 1). This park includes a soccer pitch, baseball diamonds, and linkages to the Bruce Trail. Staircase improvements are proposed at Mountain Avenue and Hillcrest .
As part of the planning process, the City will engage with local residents to shape the vision of this space. The project scope will include:
- Cladding the existing staircase with stone or granite
- Replacing the railings with a more decorative option
- Installation of a sitting area at the top of the stairs
- Improving the crosswalk at Hillcrest Ave and Mountain Avenue
- Potential Sun shelter
- Landscape improvements
- Tree plantings
During the consultation period, residents will have the opportunity to choose one of 2 stair concept plans, pick a preferred shade structure, as well as have input on the theme and elements of the playground.
Accessibility
Accessible design is about designating spaces for people of all abilities. Accessible design of outdoor spaces is regulated by the Accessibility Standard for the Design of Public Spaces, which is part of Ontario Regulation 191/11 under the Accessibility of Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA).
The Highland Gardens Park Project will incorporate universal accessibility in proposed amenities wherever feasible and possible, in accordance with the AODA.
