Early Morning Fire Forces Tenants to Find Alternate Living Arrangements
HAMILTON, ON – The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at the rear of a two ½ storey single detached house ,occupied as a duplex, located at 49 West Ave South, Hamilton at approximately 4:26 am this morning. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed heavy fire and smoke at the rear of 49 West Ave South with flames impinging on a neighboring home to the south and all of the occupants of 49 West Ave South had safely evacuate.
Due to the age, construction and close proximity of neighbouring houses, this alarm was upgraded to a Multiple Alarm which brought additional firefighters to the scene to assist in firefighting operation. The fire was quickly knocked down by firefighters, with fire damage confined to 49 West Ave South and slight damages to the exterior of 51 West Ave South.
Damage to the home is extensive and has been estimated at approximately $250,000. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been contacted to assist in determining the cause.
Fire Crews are expected to remain on scene dealing with spot fires for an extended period this morning and there have been no reported injuries. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist occupants of the home with alternate living arrangements
