The Roadway Maintenance section maintains approximately 6,500 lane km’s of road right-of-way, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We provide a safe, reliable, roadway network for all roadway users including residents, emergency services, transit, cyclists, and pedestrians. We are responsible for managing the operation and maintenance of the City’s roadway network by means of a variety of activities and services including emergency response.
Section Consists of 4 Districts - North, East, South and West.

District District North encompasses Wards 1, 2, 3 and 4 which has West 5th and Queen Street escarpment accesses.

District East encompasses lower Stoney Creek / Binbrook covering Wards 5, 9,10 and 11 westerly to the border roadway Trinity Church Road. It also includes the RHVP, and several escarpment accesses such as Centennial, McNeilly, and Fifty Road with a mix of urban and rural services.

District South encompasses Trinity Church Road through to Mount Hope, covering Wards 6, 7, 8, 11, and 14. This includes Kenilworth, Sherman, Claremont and Jolly Cut escarpment accesses with a mix of urban and rural services.

District West encompasses Waterdown, Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough covering Wards 12, 13, and 15 primarily servicing rural areas.
A Winter Operator - Roads is responsible for performing diverse operations across the City of Hamilton to help ensure safe travel for the public during the winter season
Responsibilities include
- Operates and performs basic inspections and maintenance on various pieces of equipment such as but not limited to: crew cabs, mechanical equipment and associated implements, backhoes, tractors, loaders, dump trucks, sweepers, asphalt rollers, flushers, and crew cabs with crane and/or electric tailgate attachments.
- Must conduct pre/post trip inspections on all equipment that the Operator is assigned and qualified to operate. i.e. dump truck, crew cab, etc.
- Performs duties in various locations of the Roadway Maintenance Section. Duties vary dependant on location, rural, urban setting and weather. All locations present different site conditions and as such walking, bending, lifting, twisting, shovelling, kneeling & standing for prolonged periods may be required as part of this position. Duties include but not limited to filling potholes, shovelling, manual labour, traffic control (flagging), operation of various power tools, vehicles, grass cutting equipment, driving specialized equipment, concrete
- repairs, ground restoration duties, litter/bulk pick up, working around water.
- Performs basic inspections and minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
- Completes documentation such as but not limited to daily activity logs, inspection sheets (i.e. pre-trip) and various reports, as required.
- Interacts with the general public, external agencies, supervisors and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner that uphold the City of Hamilton s’ Corporate values.
- Works with competent knowledge in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety
Job qualifications
- Must possess a valid Class "D" Licence with a "Z" endorsement and a Driver’s abstract clear of any demerit points and pending infractions
- Must be available and able to work shifts including Days, Afternoons, Nights, Weekends and Statutory Holidays and be able to respond to Overtime call in when required
- Demonstrated roads maintenance experience and training related to duties and programs listed above normally acquired by a combination of education and relevant work experience. OSSD or equivalent would be considered an asset.
- Previous experience, training and competent ability to operate vehicles such as but not limited to: crew cabs, stake, dump trucks, other tools and equipment associated with road and sidewalk maintenance in a safe manner.
- Must have good interpersonal skills to interact with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
- Must be able to work in adverse road & weather conditions
Physical demands
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 23 kgs., with an occasional requirement to lift up to 45 kgs.
- Temporary Winter Operator position is full-time employment (80 hours biweekly)
- We provide on the job training (i.e. Plow training, Book 7, First Aid, WHMIS, MOL)
- We provide a regular hourly rate of $26.031 to $28.295 per hour
- Temporary Winter Operator employment is offered for a 5-month contract.
- Our Fulltime Operator recruitment begins February 15 and we offer positions based on the number of vacancies, by seniority, and upon successful completion of the interview process.
- The winter season typically runs from November 1 to April 15 each year
- Winter season currently operates under a three-shift model:
- Days 7 am to 3pm
- Afternoons 3 to 11 pm
- Nights 11 pm to 7am
- You will be assigned a home Yard location and shift assignment for the entire Winter season. We do consider the proximity to your home address, however, we assign Yard location and shift assignment based on operational requirements.

Interview

Driver Abstract
- A review of the candidates’ current driving abstract. Candidates must have a current and valid DZ driving license with zero demerits.
- You are not required to provide an abstract. You will be asked to sign an MTO consent form allowing the City to check your abstract.
Driving Evaluation Road Test
If you are successful in the interview and Driver abstract check in the recruitment process you will be contacted via email to schedule your driving evaluation road test. Ensure you check your junk and spam folders for emails. The email will contain the following information:
- The proposed date, time, and location of your road evaluation.
- The contact name information you will need to contact to confirm your road evaluation.
- The deadline for you to respond - If you do not contact us by the deadline in the email we send you, we will assume that you are not interested in the position and you will not be given further consideration.
- Road evaluation road tests will evaluate candidates driving skills. Please note candidates must be able to demonstrate and describe the procedure to inspect vehicle components schedule 1 including in cab assessment and the procedure to test air brake components.
- Please ensure you arrive at your driving evaluation road test wearing safety boots, gloves, and a high visibility shirt, jacket or vest.
References
If you are successful at all stages of the recruitment process you will need to provide two references. A reference is a person who can speak to your work ethic and past experience. It is someone you have directly reported to. If you do not have two work-related references, you can use a teacher or leader in a volunteer group that you have been involved with.
Vaccine Verification
As a condition of employment, you are required to provide proof that you are fully vaccinated or provide proof of valid exemption satisfactory to the employer prior to your start date.
