Harm Reduction Supplies

How your agency can apply to become a harm reduction supply distributor:

• Complete the HR Satellite Site Survey Form(PDF, 127.59 KB)
• Email it to [email protected]
• Public Health Services will review your application (review process may take several weeks)
• If approved, your staff will be provided with accounts and training for the Provincial database, which is used to document the distribution of harm reduction supplies.

Supplies for safer inhalation and safer injection are available, along with sharps disposal bins.

Naloxone Distribution Only

Adults can safely dispose of a found needle by following the below steps and using the proper equipment. To dispose of a needle safely, you will need: 

• Tongs and/or puncture-proof gloves.
• Plastic or metal container with a lid: Examples include an empty pop bottle, a household cleaner bottle, or a metal coffee can.

Disposal Steps:

• Use tongs and/or put on gloves to handle the needle.
• Bring a puncture-proof, sealable container to the area where you found the needle.
• Pick up the needle by the middle of the plastic tube, with the sharp end facing down.
• Place the needle in the container sharp end first and close the container tightly.
• Remove gloves and wash your hands and any equipment used with soap and water.
• Take the container to one of the following locations for safe disposal: 
  • Needle Syringe Program (Harm Reduction Supply) Site
  • Hamilton Community Recycling Centre (CRC) *Recycling Centres are closed Sunday
    • Mountain Community Recycling Centre - Upper Ottawa St. and Kilbride Road
    • Dundas Community Recycling Centre Olympic Drive north of King St. E
    • Kenora Community Recycling Centre - 460 Kenora Ave.

Important Notes:

• Hamilton Community Recycling Centres will only accept needles and syringes in plastic or metal containers with a lid.
• Label the container “syringes”
• Do not flush or dispose of needles in curbside garbage or Blue Box containers.

A sharps or needle disposal bin is a sturdy container designed for the safe disposal of used needles and other sharp medical instruments.

The City of Hamilton has placed these bins in select locations to reduce improperly discarded needles. Providing a safe way to dispose of needles is a priority for the City.
