Installing & using a rain barrel
Location: Install your rain barrel where you intend to use it.
- E.g., If you plan on watering your backyard garden, connect the rain barrel to a downspout in your backyard.
- Ensure there is a level, sturdy surface for your rain barrel to sit on using materials such as bricks or concrete pavers.
Downspout connection
- Ensure your gutter and downspout is clean and free of debris to maximize flow and limit pollutants in the water.
- Your downspout will need to be trimmed to the correct height, and a short elbow piece attached to direct rain flow into the top opening of your rain barrel.
Water pressure
- Remember, the flow rate decreases as the barrel empties.
- You can improve the flow by elevating your rain barrel.
- If desired, a pump can be installed for high-pressure flow.
Stick to drip irrigation or watering cans
- Because of natural low-pressure flow, sprinklers or spraying hoses will not be effective.
