Prenatal, Family & Child Health Referrals
The City of Hamilton offers prenatal supports for residents of Hamilton. Prenatal supports include:
FREE Online Prenatal Program
- Available to all Hamilton residents who are pregnant
- Topics covered: pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, newborn care
- Interactive program that can be done at client’s own pace
Virtual Prenatal Breastfeeding Class
- Offered to those who have registered for the online prenatal program
- Facilitated by a Public Health Nurse
Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (Welcome Baby)
- Weekly, free prenatal nutrition group focusing on healthy pregnancy and taking care of your baby
- Facilitated by a Registered Dietician and Public Health Nurse
- Clients must be pregnant to register and can attend the program until their baby is 6 months old
- Clients receive grocery gift cards, gift cards for prenatal vitamins, bus tickets, and Vitamin D for babies receiving breastmilk
Prenatal Intake Calls
- Offered to all clients who have registered for the online prenatal program and/or attending Welcome Baby
- Phone calls are completed by a Public Health Nurse to offer support to clients and ensure they are connected to needed programs and services prior to birth
Refer your breastfeeding clients to Health Connections (905-546-3550) if they are experiencing difficulties with:
Babies with more than 10% weight loss or are slow to gain weight
Babies with low birth weight (less than 2500 g)
Breast reduction or augmentation
Congenital newborn abnormalities
Suckling or latch difficulties
Tongue tie
Supplementation
Use of lactation aids such as a shield or tubes
Sore, cracked or bleeding nipples
Flat or inverted nipples
Previous difficulties with milk supply
Low or perceived low milk supply
Preterm birth issues
Multiple birth
Management of yeast or thrush
Management of mastitis
Management of blocked ducts
Behavioural or developmental issues

The Healthy Babies, Healthy Children program provides home visits by public health nurses and home visitors. They visit pregnant women and new parents with children from birth to school entry to:
- Provide prenatal support
- Promote healthy growth and development for the baby
- Tell parents about local community programs and supports
- Help parents connect with their baby
- Discuss breastfeeding, food and healthy eating
How to make a referral
Refer your clients to the Healthy Babies, Health Children program by faxing the referral form to 905-546-3592 or call Health Connections at 905-546-3550 and provide details from the form over the phone.
Visit Parenting Groups in Hamilton
The City of Hamilton offers parenting groups for residents of Hamilton.
Parenting groups include:
- Parenting with LOVE for parents with children under age six
- Group Triple P for parents of children ages two to six
- Triple P Discussion Groups for parents of children ages two to six
- Group Theraplay for parents/caregivers and their child(ren) ages two to six to attend together
Public health nurses teach the parenting groups incorporating the following positive parenting topics:
- Building a positive relationship between parent and child
- Strategies for helping parents teach their children to behave well
- Strategies for responding when children behave in challenging ways
Your clients can register for a parenting group by calling Public Health at 905-546-3550 Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. A public health nurse can help your clients decide which parenting group is the best choice for their family.
