Know before you go! HSR real-time updates, coming January 2, 2025
Get instant information on planned detours & unexpected service disruptions, in addition to bus arrival times available through popular third-party trip planning apps.
Starting January 2, 2025, HSR is making it easier to know before you go with real-time updates.
You’ll get instant information on planned detours and unexpected service disruptions, in addition to bus arrival times - all available through popular third-party trip planning apps. Powered by General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) data from the City of Hamilton, this new service makes it easier than ever to plan your trip.
Trip planning apps help you get the information you need, when you need it. With information posted through open data directly into trip planning apps, HSR will no longer be using X (formerly Twitter) to post disruptions.
You may see service alerts during the month of December as we work to test the system.
We want to hear from you!
We value your feedback. Please take the survey or email us at [email protected] to share your comments.
Thank you for riding with HSR.
Frequently Asked Questions
Planned detours are for things like major construction, road closures for festivals and events. Planned detours may last for a day, weeks or even months, depending on the event.
Unexpected service disruptions can happen at any time of the day or night and can be caused by things like accidents or emergencies. These disruptions could include delays, temporary stop relocations or temporary detours. Some short disruptions may not be posted.
When an unexpected service disruption results in a detour, HSR’s priority is the safety of the Operator and the customers on board and at bus stops. Once we’re assured everyone is safe, and determined the most efficient detour possible, the detour is communicated to Operations staff, and then posted to the City’s open data program. This means there will be a time delay between what is happening on the road versus what is posted publicly.
Information about planned detours, such as special events and planned construction projects, will be posted on hamilton.ca/HSRdetours as well as our social media pages, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). The information will also be shared as an alert on trip planning tools that use our real-time information.
Notifications for planned detours and delays will also be shared as an alert on trip planning services that use our real-time information.
Notifications for unexpected service disruptions will be shared as an alert on trip planning services that use our real-time information. Before you make your way to your bus stop, please check one of the trip planners to see if there is an alert on your route.
Note that there may be a brief delay in public notifications. HSR prioritizes safety first, then reroutes buses and posts updates as quickly as possible.

Our GTFS feeds allow third-party applications to provide real-time updates about HSR, making it easier for you to check for service disruptions and plan your commute.
Some service providers choose to share our static information, meaning that bus arrival times are based on pre-scheduled service and service disruption information is not included.
Different websites and apps use their own methods to show whether the information they share is static or real-time. Often different colour text or symbols are used to indicate real-time arrival information.
HSR is unable to provide support for third-party transit applications and websites. For support with third-party apps, please reach out directly to the developer.
