Language Assessment
Before starting a language class, it is important to have your current language skills assessed. The Coordinated Language Assessment & Referral System Centre, also known as CLARS, provides free language assessment and referral services to newcomers.

Language Classes in Hamilton
Newcomers in Hamilton can access free Government funded English as a Second Language, or ESL, classes and Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada, or LINC.
- LINC classes are funded by the federal government and are open to permanent residents, protected persons, and convention refugees.
- ESL classes are funded by the provincial government and have no resident status requirements. There may be a small fee for enrolment.
Many of these organizations offer online classes.

Social Insurance Numbers
The Government of Canada uses Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) to keep track of all Canadian workers. You must have a SIN to work in Canada.

To apply for your Social Insurance Number you can apply online at sin-nas.canada.ca/en/Sin or you can go in person to a Service Canada point of service at one of these locations:

Employment Services
There are several employment service providers in Hamilton. Only individuals who are eligible to work in Canada are eligible for one-on-one counselling and Employment Ontario programs. Anyone is welcome to use the resource centres. These services are generally available at no cost to users.
