Drinking Water Haulers

Drinking water haulage vehicles often provide water:

• To homes in rural areas with cisterns or shallow wells with poor or unreliable water
• In emergencies to municipalities, businesses and homes where municipal water supplies cannot be used

Drinking Water Haulage Vehicle Inspections

Public Health Services inspects drinking water haulage vehicles every year to prevent or reduce illnesses related to drinking water. 

Inspectors check operator requirements such as:

• Getting drinking water from a supply that meets the requirements of Ontario Regulation 169/03 under the Safe Drinking Water Act 
• Protecting the tank, equipment and connections from becoming contaminated during storage, filling, transportation and delivery of the drinking water
• Ensuring that equipment used for the distribution of drinking water is clean and safe
• Ensuring that anything that may contaminate the water does not enter the container, such as insects, rodents, chemicals or lubricants
• Ensuring that containers are clean and sanitized before carrying water
• Making sure containers are labelled (i.e., “Drinking Water”)

If a public health inspector determines that something at the water source, in storage, transport or delivery is a health hazard under the Health Promotion and Protection Act, they will issue an order to remedy the health hazard.
