Update Your School Support Designation
On Monday, September 22, 2025, Ward 8 voters will elect a new City Councillor. The City is encouraging eligible voters to see how they can cast their ballot.
In the coming weeks, property owners, tenants and households will receive a voters’ card with important information on where to vote in the upcoming Ward 8 Councillor By-election.
Your vote matters! City Councillors represent the interests of residents in their ward by making decisions on local policies, programs and services. They work closely with City staff and the Mayor to shape Hamilton’s priorities and respond to community needs.
All eligible Ward 8 voters are encouraged to vote in the by-election and make their voices heard.
Who can vote
You are eligible to vote if you:
- are a Canadian citizen;
- are at least 18 years old;
- are a tenant or property owner in Ward 8, Hamilton; and
- are not prohibited from voting under law.
The City encourages all eligible voters to participate and take part in shaping the future of their community.
Voter Notification Cards
New for this by-election! Only one voters’ card per property or unit will be distributed, and voters will not receive a personalized voters’ card. The Voters Card outlining Voting information (dates, locations) will be sent to each household in Ward 8 in late August.
You do not need to have a voters’ card to vote, only valid identification or a completed declaration is required. A list of acceptable identification is available at O. Reg. 304/13 VOTER IDENTIFICATION | ontario.ca
If, for any reason, a qualified elector will be unable to personally cast their ballot, they may appoint someone (a voting proxy) to go to the voting place and cast a ballot on their behalf.
To appoint a voting proxy, the individual must fill out two copies of the Appointment for Voting Proxy Form (Form 3) and give the copies to the person that they are appointing as their proxy.
- Qualified electors assigning a proxy must know who they want to appoint as their proxy when they fill out and sign the form.
- The person they want to appoint must be eligible to vote in this election and should be someone they trust to mark the ballot in the way they have instructed them to.
- Both the elector making the proxy appointment and the voting proxy are required to be on the Voters’ List.
- To be added to the Voters’ List, an Application to Amend the Voters’ List must be completed by the elector.
- Both the elector making the proxy appointment and the voting proxy are required to provide identification proving that they are qualified electors in Ward 8
- Qualified electors can appoint a proxy after the nominations have been certified.
- After August 12, 2025, If someone has been appointed as a voting proxy, they must take the completed forms to the municipal clerk to get them certified during regular business hours, or 12 pm to 5 pm at the poll by request during advanced polling dates.
- Once the forms have been certified, they may cast a vote on behalf of the person who appointed them.
