Post-Secondary Student Placements
Post-Secondary Co-op Students
A co-op student is one who is enrolled in a recognized post-secondary program in which classroom instruction is alternated with semesters of work placements related to the field of study. In order to be considered a “co-op” student, they must be registered in a co-op program through their educational institution.
Student education level
- The student applying is expected to be at a post-secondary education level
- They need to be registered in either college or university.
Employment duration
- The student will be employed for the length of a semester, broken up into 4-month terms.
- A student cannot exceed four co-op terms.
Hours of work
- Various hours of work.
- Decided by the program and academic institution requirements.
Pay rate
- Co-ops can be paid or not paid.
- Pay is determined by the hiring manager.
Program requirements

Students must be enrolled in a recognized educational institution in a formal co-operative program.
Type of work
- Co-op students should be provided a meaningful work experience and be exposed to all elements of the position, both administrative and technical.
- Under strict supervision, students should be taking a “hands on” approach in the workplace.
Interviews
- Managers may choose to interview if they have a selection of students.
- Details can be made in conjunction with the co-op program coordinator within the school.
Application process
- On-line applications are not available through the City of Hamilton’s website.
- Students are to apply to the hiring manager directly as per the posting’s instructions, and /or through their school’s co-op office.
Internships
This type of student is enrolled in a supervised program for on-the-job training. Assignments are designed to give the student the skills, knowledge and ability required for entry into a career or profession. Interns typically are near the end of their post-secondary education, or have completed and graduated their post-secondary education and/or graduate studies, and are now looking to transition into their career. This acts as a stepping stone for students. Interns tend to be more in professional fields (ie: Legal, Engineering, Teaching, Accounting etc..)

Internships typically last for 9 months to one year or more.
Hours of work
- The student is expected to work full-time work hours.
- The hours of work will be determined by the student and the hiring department.
Pay rate
- Interns are paid students.
- Rates of pay are dependent on the position and it’s respective Collective Agreement.
Program requirements

- Interns should be more independent and managing their own duties and projects.

Apprenticeships
This type of student is enrolled in a trades program for on-the-job training. Assignments are designed to give the student the skills, knowledge and ability required for entry into a career or profession in the trades. Students receive a combination of on-the-job training and classroom learning. Visit the Ontario College of Trades and to view a list of trades professions.
Student education level

Must have obtained OSSD as per the Ministry guidelines.
Program requirements

- Must be registered with the OCT (Ontario College of Trades).

- Students should be performing a large part of the job.
- They should be more independent and managing their own duties and projects.
