First Place is a 25 storey senior apartment tower on a 3 storey commercial base, constructed in 1976. As part of the Rapid Housing Initiative, 9,500 sq. ft. of underutilized commercial space on the ground floor has been converted into a residential compartment comprising of 15 ‘bachelor’ units (including 4 accessible units).
The residential compartment has its own entrance and address on the south side of the building – 263 Main Street East; and is also connected to the remainder of the existing property through the commercial space during regular business hours.
The 300 sq. ft. units are loaded on the south side of an interior corridor, allowing access to exterior windows (natural light) along the Main Street façade. The compartment has a dedicated laundry space, a community room, garbage room, an office, and a public barrier free washroom.
