Update on the Hamilton Waterfront Trust
Waterfront programming and services transitioning to the City of Hamilton
The City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Waterfront Trust (HWT) are working together to complete the planned transition of waterfront programming and services to the City.
The HWT will dissolve on March 31, 2026, with programs, services and assets transitioning to City management on April 1, 2026.
For residents and visitors, the goal is simple: continue enjoying the waterfront experiences you know and value.
What this means for residents and visitors
The transition is a governance change, not a service reduction.
Waterfront programming and amenities will continue under City management, including:
- Outdoor rink
- Harbour tours
- Waterfront trolley
- Music and entertainment events
- Community bookings
Residents and visitors should continue to expect the same access to waterfront programs and activities.
Why this transition is happening
The HWT was created in 2000 to support waterfront land development and improvement projects.
With many of those major development projects now complete, Council determined that integrating the Trust’s remaining programs and services directly into City operations would:
- Strengthen oversight and financial controls
- Improve transparency and public accountability
- Align waterfront operations with municipal governance standards
- Deliver services more efficiently through existing City operations
- This transition reflects the natural evolution from major capital development to long-term operations and programming.

About the Hamilton Waterfront Trust
The HWT was established in 2000 as a separate legal entity to support waterfront development and enhancement projects.
Since its creation, the HWT coordinated approximately $6.3 million in investments to improve public access and enjoyment of Hamilton’s waterfront.
The City recognizes the contributions of the Trust’s Board, staff and partners who helped shape Hamilton’s waterfront into the community destination it is today.
Staying connected
Residents and visitors can expect the same waterfront programming and public access they enjoy today to continue under City management.
Updates and information on how to book harbour tours and trolley rides will be shared on this page as they become available.
