January 4 is National Ribbon Skirt Day and was inspired by the story of Isabella Kulak of the Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan who was shamed for wearing her handmade ribbon skirt to a formal wear day at her elementary school. This experience led Manitoba Senator Mary Jane McCallum to put forward bill S-219 in parliament to recognize National Ribbon Skirt Day which was passed in December 2022.
National Ribbon Skirt Day provides an opportunity to recognize, learn and celebrate the importance of Indigenous traditions, identity, and culture.
Ribbon skirts are a symbol of identity, adaptation, and survival for Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people and represents a direct connection to Mother Earth.
Let's collectively continue to advance reconciliation and raise awareness of Indigenous traditions and expression of culture.
