Statement by Mayor Fred Eisenberger on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
HAMILTON, ON - This year marks the 30th anniversary of the tragic mass shooting at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal that saw the lives of 14 women cut violently short. This senseless and brutal act led to Parliament designating December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
On behalf of the City of Hamilton, I call on every Hamiltonian to question, call out, and speak up against the violence and discrimination towards women, girls, and people of diverse gender identities. Together, we can help bring an end to gender-based violence and create a culture of mutual respect.
All flags at City of Hamilton facilities will be lowered to half-staff on Friday, December 6, and returned to full staff on Monday, December 9, as we honour those who have experienced gender-based violence.
Today, and always, we remember Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte, and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.
