Stewart Memorial Church’s Significance Highlighted at Upcoming Emancipation Day Event
Hamilton, ON – July 21, 2016 - Griffin House National Historic Site is pleased mark Emancipation Day with a special talk about Hamilton’s historic Stewart Memorial Church on Sunday, July 31 from 1 to 4 pm
Historian and archivist, Evelyn Auchinvole, will highlight the importance of Stewart Memorial Church as a religious and social centre for Hamilton’s black community and its historical connection to fugitive slaves and the Underground Railroad.
For many years, the Canadian government has officially designated August 1 “Emancipation Day” in commemoration of the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire on August 1, 1834.
This event has free admission and will take place at Griffin House National Historic Site, located at 733 Mineral Springs Rd. E. in Ancaster. Light refreshments will be served.
There is limited parking onsite for those with mobility issues. The rest of the public is asked to use the paid parking at the nearby Hermitage parking lot.
