City monitoring the presence of decaying algae at multiple waterway locations

HAMILTON, ON – The City of Hamilton is continuing to monitor the presence of suspected decaying algae in various locations between the Desjardins Canal in Dundas and the Macassa Bay Yacht Club in Hamilton Harbour.

At this time, staff are investigating and suspect that the recent increase in decaying algae is a result of high levels of nitrogen and phosphorous in the water which can lead to rapid levels of algae growth when there is significant heat and sunlight. This can result in unpleasant odours and floating algae mats in these locations.

Hamilton Water has collected samples of the material for microscopic investigation in addition to water quality samples. Staff are waiting for the results of that analysis to determine whether there are any abnormal indicators that would require additional investigation.

As a precaution, Hamilton Water has reviewed the electronic monitoring for both wastewater treatment plants and combined sewer facilities to verify proper operation. Staff have physically inspected the treatment plants, all the combined sewer tanks and the combined sewer outfalls, with no indication of any abnormal operation.

The City has connected with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) in addition to stakeholders in the area including the Royal Botanical Gardens.
