Wi-Fi on Buses - Pilot Project
Hamilton, ON - As we begin to (re)envision the HSR, we’re enhancing your experience. The first week of October, HSR is conducting a two-month pilot project that will see free Wi-Fi provided on 15 buses, operating on various routes across the city. Buses will be clearly marked to indicate Wi-Fi is available. Similar to other areas where the City of Hamilton offers free Wi-Fi, customers will need to accept our Terms and Conditions in order to access Wi-Fi on our buses.
At the conclusion of the pilot project, we will present our recommendations for future development of the program to Council. To understand our customers’ experience using the free Wi-Fi service, we are asking them to fill out a brief survey at www.hamilton.ca/HSRwifi.
There are several ways to find out if the bus you are travelling on has Wi-Fi:
- The outside of the bus will be marked with a Wi-Fi symbol beside the front door and on the destination sign.
- The inside of the bus will include information posted in the “Take One” slots near the driver explaining how to access the Wi-Fi.
- The network will appear on your device as a Wi-Fi option.
- Community message board (behind Operator on the bus)
Pilot Project Background
- The pilot project is part of the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF) from the Government of Canada, with half of the cost being contributed by the City of Hamilton through Council approval.
- HSR has 267 buses in its fleet operating on 34 routes through approximately 2700 bus stops, shelters, and terminals across the city. In 2017 approximately 21,400,000 rides were provided.
