City sharing Keddy Access Trail safety tips as part of Bike Month
HAMILTON, ON – With more residents choosing active transportation methods as part of Bike Month and the warmer weather, the City of Hamilton is sharing safety tips for residents using the Keddy Access Trail.
Keddy Access Trail visitors are reminded of the following safety tips:
- Never speed on trails. As a cyclist, do not exceed 15 km/hr riding down the trail and always slow down to pass others.
- Cyclists and pedestrians are expected to share the trail by keeping right and passing on the left.
- When passing pedestrians or cyclists, give audible warning in advance.
- Cyclists are encouraged to use a bell, a front light, and a rear reflector on their bikes.
- Cyclists should wear a helmet and cyclists under 18 years of age are required to wear a helmet.
- Travel according to weather conditions.
- Watch for children.
- As a pedestrian, keep pets close and on a leash.
- Pedestrians should avoid distractions while walking like texting or talking on the phone.
- Stay on the trail and obey signs and signals when exiting the trail.
- Plan your trip in advance. The Keddy Access Trail connects to various cycling networks across Hamilton and residents have access to cycling routes and maps
Quick facts
- Construction of the Keddy Access Trail took place from August 2020 to December 2020 and coincided with the Claremont Access upbound resurfacing project.
- The construction of the Keddy Access Trail, named in honour of Jay Keddy was facilitated by re-purposing a vehicular travel lane on one of the city’s busiest mountain access corridors in order to provide a high-quality active transportation connection between the lower city and mountain.
- The trail is 2.7 km in length with four side connections at various locations that connect trail users to existing cycling networks.
- Last month, the City and Dillon Consulting won a Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Technical Achievement Award for the Keddy Access Trail in the sustainable mobility category.
- As part of the Vision Zero Action Plan, the City’s education campaigns focus on transforming roadway safety with a simple goal: zero fatalities or serious injuries on roadways. Vision Zero emphasizes safe speeds, safe roads, safe vehicles and safe drivers.
