City Council Passes Motion to Create Housing & Sustainability Investment Roadmap
In alignment with the roadmap, Council votes to renew 476 affordable homes
Hamilton, ON – Mayor Andrea Horwath and Hamilton City Council have taken another critical step towards housing affordability by passing a motion at council to create the Housing Sustainability and Investment Roadmap.
“People should be able to find a decent home they can afford, where they can put down roots and build a good life,” said Horwath. “I’m absolutely committed to turning that goal into a reality, and the Housing and Sustainability Investment Roadmap is a solution-building tool that will move Hamilton forward.”
Working together with community partners, the Housing Sustainability and Investment Roadmap takes a whole-of-city approach across four pillars: new construction of affordable housing, maintaining and preservation of existing units, acquisition, and the provision of housing-based supports.
Additionally, City Council passed a motion, introduced by Councillor Nrinder Nann, to invest $1 million to repair and renew 476 CityHousing Hamilton units. This strategic investment is in direct alignment with a key priority of the Housing Sustainability and Investment Roadmap. The repair and renewal of existing units will alleviate the pressures caused by the city’s housing crisis.
Hamilton has declared a homelessness, opioid addiction and mental health state of emergency. The City is calling on provincial and federal governments to aid municipalities fighting this crisis.
