Significant snowfall predicted: Motorists asked to park off the street

HAMILTON, ON - March 13, 2017 – With current weather forecasts predicting a significant snowfall across the City starting later today and extending into Tuesday, City of Hamilton winter operations crews are preparing to ensure roads are cleared as effectively as possible.

As always, motorists are being asked to please park their cars off the street wherever possible as clearing the roads is safer and faster if there are no parked cars along the streets. Residents should not push or shovel snow into the roadway and should also ensure that fire hydrants on or near their property are kept clear.

Any resident with garbage collection scheduled in the coming days should remember to place their garbage can, green cart and blue boxes where the collectors can get to them but not where they can get swept up or buried by the snow plow.

Crews will begin salting, sanding and clearing main arterial roads and escarpment crossings first, and will then move onto collector roads and side streets that feed arterial roads. Once the escarpment, arterial and collector roads are serviced, crews will then start clearing residential and rural roads.

The City of Hamilton’s Snow and Ice By-law No. 03-296 requires property owners and/or occupants to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property and from roofs that overhang the City sidewalk within 24 hours after the end of a snow event. Failure to remove and clear snow and ice may result in a notice to comply.
