Building evacuated because of high levels of carbon monoxide
HAMILTON, ON - February 6, 2017 - The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in an 8 storey apartment building located at 170 East Ave South, Hamilton at approximately 7:15 pm yesterday evening.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed there was no fire but several occupants were complaining of an odour in the building and some were complaining of not feeling well. Firefighters immediately began to investigate and discovered elevated readings of carbon monoxide (CO) in the building.
Carbon monoxide levels as high as 48ppm were reported by firefighters in the building on various floors and locations. This building contains 46 apartment units with approximately 45 residents. All of the residents were evacuated by firefighters and did not require any medical treatment. An HSR bus was brought to this location so that the displaced occupants could be offered shelter from the cold weather.
Fire-fighters immediately started ventilation procedures in order to clear the building of all CO. All residents of the building were allowed to return to their apartment units at 9 pm once the levels of CO were recorded at zero.
A representative from Union Gas attended the scene and continues to investigate the source of the problem.
