The launch event will be on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at 11 am in Carter Park, Stinson St. at West Ave. South. 11 am remarks followed by the Stinson Community Association’s Carter Park Art Celebration event with local artists, a BBQ and children painting until 2 pm.
About the Art
- The work was commissioned as part of the Carter Park Makeover project initiated by the community through the Stinson Neighbourhood Action Plan.
- The mural is 10 ft. (3.0 m) high and 70 ft. (21.3 m) long.
- It was painted in the artist’s studio on a series of 14 separate aluminum composite panels that were then assembled in the park.
The work is of a vibrant scene of local wildlife playing in the park entwined with a basketball, baseballs, football and a kite that represent the activities in the park. Also included is a depiction of the historic Hamilton Collegiate Institute building, previously located just to the north of the park, and the heart of the neighbourhood, until it was destroyed by fire in 1948. The wide layout of the mural is a triptych style design, which creates flow and allows consistency with colour and line weight.
A volunteer jury of citizens, artists and project stakeholders selected Bryce’s work selected from 33 submissions through the City of Hamilton’s public art process. The Jury noted that the work’s “playful character will appeal to area youth and responds well to the recreation and play areas that are important and well-used parts of the park. The work also addresses the natural and historical character of the area through the depiction of urban animals and the tower of the Hamilton Collegiate Institute.”
The artist was awarded $17,000 to paint the work. Materials and installation were provided by the city.
