City of Hamilton responding to urgent erosion concerns on Sydenham escarpment access
HAMILTON, ON - To safely address an urgent erosion and slope stability concern along the Sydenham Road escarpment access, the City of Hamilton will close the Sydenham escarpment access this week to immediately conduct required repairs.
Concerns about the stability of the escarpment in this area were raised through a routine maintenance review and have been identified as needing immediate attention in the interest of public safety.
As a result, a full closure of Sydenham Road will occur on Wednesday, February 16, for approximately two to three days, weather permitting. Given this closure is occurring at the same time as the closure on Hwy 8 and will create a long detour for motorists in the area, the City is doing everything we can to reopen Sydenham Road as quickly as possible to limit the inconvenience to motorists. The road is expected reopen to traffic each night around 7 p.m. while work is not occurring.
No formal detour will be set for this closure and it is recommended that motorists avoid the area if possible. The City understands this closure is challenging due to both the geography of the Sydenham Road access and other construction in the area, however this work must be done immediately in order to avoid a slope failure along Sydenham Road.
Given the nature of the work, exact timing may change depending on weather. Updates will be posted on Twitter@CityofHamilton.
The City of Hamilton thanks residents for their patience as we complete these important infrastructure repairs.
