City of Hamilton seeking community input on implementation of a vacant home tax
HAMILTON, ON – This September, the City of Hamilton invites the community to participate in a Vacant Home Tax Survey to understand how implementing a vacant home tax will impact residents and homeowners as well as determine what factors the City needs to consider upon implementation.
Survey feedback will be used to inform a framework to develop a vacant home tax bylaw. The framework will determine the next steps in developing the bylaw, as well as identify any necessary implementation costs.
The survey comes from Council direction to staff in July, to review the feasibility of imposing a tax on vacant residential properties to encourage occupation of those properties. Revenues gained from the tax would be aimed at supporting affordable housing in Hamilton.
The online survey takes approximately five minutes to complete and will be running from September 7 to 28, 2021.
Community members can take the survey online by visiting: www.engage.hamilton.ca/vht.
