City preparing for freezing rain and more winter weather
HAMILTON, ON – City of Hamilton crews are preparing to respond to more winter weather over the coming weekend. With possible freezing rain in the forecast, forestry and roads crews have extra staff on standby to respond quickly as needed.
Freezing rain could result in downed trees, slippery driving and power outages.
Should the weather turn warmer, there could be a potential for flooding in the area. Conditions may result in road flooding and/or ponding in low lying areas such as backyards and drainage areas. Residents should exercise caution around all bodies of water and keep children and pets away from frozen water that may be unstable.
Motorists should be cautious if driving on icy or flooded roads.
Tips for avoiding flooding
- Keep catch basins in front of your home clear of snow and ice and other debris.
- If your home has a backwater valve installed, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning to ensure that it is functioning properly.
- Check your sump pump to make sure it is working properly.
- If your home or area is prone to flooding you may want to consider ensuring any valuables are up off of basement floors.
Given the weather could result in ice build-up, high winds and fallen branches / trees, residents are reminded to keep back from downed power lines, and to report them to emergency services immediately.
