City reaches $1 billion in building permits earliest on record
HAMILTON, ON – On June 17, 2022, the City of Hamilton surpassed $1 billion worth of construction since the beginning of the year. 2022 now marks the earliest the City has reached the billion-dollar mark in construction value. This milestone represents 3761 building projects in the residential, institutional, commercial, and industrial sectors.
This is the second time the City has reached the billion-dollar mark in the first half of the year, thirteen days earlier than the previous record set in 2021. The City has consistently reached the $1 billion milestone for over ten years in a row.
After two years of remotely supporting building within the city, the Building Division re-opened to the public on April 25, 2022. The ability to return to both in-person and electronic building permit services has been a positive change, providing more options for the public to apply for building permits.
The $1 billion milestone is an indicator of the success of the construction industry in Hamilton, which in turn supports Hamilton’s economic growth, provides employment opportunities, new housing, and places for businesses to thrive.
Quick Facts
- Total construction value up to and including June 2022 is comprised of 72.7% residential, 25.7% industrial/commercial/institutional, and 1.6% miscellaneous (Signs, demolitions, fire repair, tents, sewage systems, protective plumbing)
- Residential has increased 31.1% over the previous 3-year average for a total of $749 million.
- Industrial, commercial, institutional has remained consistent with the previous 3-year average for a total of $265 million. Within that average, the institutional sector has increased 130.3% over the previous 3-year average, surpassing $92 million in construction value.
Surpassing $1 billion in construction value already this year, the earliest time on record, and coming after we achieved the historic milestone $2 billion worth of building permit value last year, is a strong indication that Hamilton’s economy is roaring ahead. It means jobs are being created and our community is being transformed like never before.
Mayor Fred Eisenberger
Year after year, Hamilton continues to achieve historic milestones in construction value. With 2022 marking the earliest the City has achieved $1 billion in new construction, it is clear Hamilton continues to be an attractive place for people to live, work and invest. This milestone is made possible by the collaboration, dedication and hard work of our city staff, development community, skilled trades, businesses and investors, and community stakeholders, each of whom are direct contributors to this achievement.
Jason Thorne, General Manager, Planning and Economic Development Department
Reaching the $1 billion so early in the year is a strong indication that the city has weathered the COVID-19 Pandemic and the development industry remains optimistic about Hamilton’s future. Having hit this milestone for the last 10 years, it remains clear, that Hamilton is a provincial leader in construction activity and is a prosperous community where business and people come to grow and develop. This achievement is made possible through the dedication of the many developers, owners, and contractors who support Hamilton’s growth. I am thankful for our city staff who continue to help Hamilton build as we exit the pandemic.
Alan Shaw, Chief Building Official, Director, Building Division
