City recommending residents avoid Sunday morning travel
Hamilton, ON - With significant freezing rain in the forecast during the early hours tomorrow morning, the City of Hamilton is recommending that residents avoid all non-essential travel while winter roads crews address icy road conditions.
Earlier today, HSR service was temporarily suspended on several escarpment accesses due to icy conditions. HSR customers should check @hsr and @hsrnow on Twitter tomorrow morning before leaving the house to ensure their routes are running as scheduled in the potentially severe weather.
As always, motorists are being asked to please park their cars off the street wherever possible, as clearing the roads is safer and more effective if there are no parked cars along the streets. Residents should not push or shovel ice or snow into the roadway and should also ensure that fire hydrants on or near their property are kept clear.
The City of Hamilton’s Snow and Ice By-law No. 03-296 requires property owners and/or occupants to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property and from roofs that overhang the City sidewalk within 24 hours after the end of a snow event. Failure to remove and clear snow and ice may result in a notice to comply.
Given the weather could result in ice build-up, high winds and fallen branches / trees, residents are reminded to keep back from downed power lines, and to report them to emergency services immediately.
Residents can call 905-546-2489 to report sewer back-ups, flooding over roadways, fallen trees and branches on public property or debris in drainage ditches or culverts.
Any City-service disruptions for Sunday, April 15 and the latest updates related to the storm will be posted on www.hamilton.ca and the City’s Twitter account @cityofhamilton
