Early afternoon fire force tenants to evacuate building
HAMILTON, ON – October 20, 2017 – The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire located at 97 Beechwood Avenue, Hamilton at approximately 12:06 pm this afternoon.
Upon arrival firefighters found the occupants outside of the house and confirmed a well involved fire with flames showing from the roof and heavy smoke throughout this three storey house. As a precaution, the homes immediately adjacent to the fire were also evacuated in the event of exposure. All occupants were evacuated safely.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, which proved stubborn, after an aggressive interior and exterior attack and were successful in preventing the spread of fire to neighbouring homes. The cause of this fire has been determined as accidental, as owner was doing renovations on the third floor. The family pets were located and taken to safety. Damage to the home is extensive on the third floor and roof and has been estimated at approximately $250,000. The occupants have made arrangements for alternate accommodation as the home is uninhabitable at this time.
