Early morning fire forces tenants to evacuate building
Hamilton, ON – August 1, 2017 - The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in an 18-storey high-rise apartment building located at 221 Melvin Avenue at around 3:37 am.
Upon arrival, firefighters encounter heavy smoke on the 17th floor of the building. The fire was extinguished by the tenant. Crews quickly checked for extension and hotspots. Crews immediately started ventilation procedures in order to clear the building of smoke.
Damage to apartment 1704 is estimated at $100,000 in total. The apartment is uninhabitable at this time. The damage was contained to unit 1704. No other units were affected. There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined and considered accidental.
