Fatality in early morning Waterdown fire
HAMILTON, ON – July 27, 2018 – The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 75 John Street West in Waterdown at approximately 1:39 am. On arrival, suppression personnel reported smoke visible from an upper storey balcony then proceed to the 7th floor and found a well involved apartment fire.
Combinations of search and rescue/suppression operations were immediately initiated. One patient was located on their balcony and removed. The patient was transported by Hamilton Paramedics to the General Hospital with smoke inhalation. During search and rescue operations fire personnel located a second patient in the fire apartment. This patient was found deceased at the time. The fire, which was contained to the apartment, was quickly knocked down and brought under control however the apartment sustained heavy damage.
All tenants that evacuated from the building were permitted to return to their apartments. No additional injuries to firefighters or residents were reported at the time. Damage is estimated at approximately $35,000.
The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and will be leading the investigation in conjunction with the Hamilton Police Service.
