Fire Fighters respond to two overnight fires
HAMILTON, ON – October 17, 2017 – The Hamilton Fire Department responded to two working fires overnight. At approximately 12:13 am fire crews responded to a reported house fire at 227 St. Clair Blvd., Hamilton. Upon arrival firefighters found the two occupants outside of the house and confirmed a well involved fire with flames showing from the basement windows and heavy smoke from the first floor windows of this two storey house.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire after an aggressive interior attack and were successful in preventing the spread of fire to neighbouring homes. Damage to the home is extensive and has been estimated at approximately $400,000. The occupants have made arrangements for alternate accommodation as the home is inhabitable. The cause of this fire has not yet been determined however it is not considered suspicious and there were no reported injuries but unfortunately two family pet cats did parish in the fire.
At approximately 2:01 am firefighters responded to a report of heavy smoke on the 17th floor in this 18 storey residential apartment building located at 43 Forest Ave., Hamilton. Upon arrival firefighters confirmed a working fire in the garbage chute at the 2nd floor level with heavy smoke conditions on the 17th and 18th floors. Firefighters were able to successfully knock the fire down in a short period of time and began ventilation procedures to clear the building of smoke. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is undetermined. Damage is estimated at approximately $10,000 and the electrical power to the building has been shut down by Alectra Utilities pending an inspection by the Electric Safety Authority ESA, due to water entering the building’s electrical supply.
