GTHA Mayors and Chairs support reopening

HAMILTON, ON - Today, Mayors and Chairs from the 11 largest municipal governments across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area held their regular weekly meeting to discuss the ongoing response to COVID-19 across the region.

The Mayors and Chairs discussed how the entire region continues to see a decline in new cases of COVID-19 and strong uptake by residents when it comes to vaccination.

All of the Mayors and Chairs are hopeful that the high vaccination rates will allow the province to move forward with Stage 1 of the Roadmap to Reopen.

Municipalities and their healthcare and community partners are continuing to administer COVID-19 vaccines – first doses and second doses – as quickly as vaccine shipments can be provided from the federal and provincial governments. We support the province's move to allow accelerated doses for our older residents so that we can ensure they are fully vaccinated as soon as possible. The more vaccine that can be provided to the GTHA municipalities, the faster we can provide residents with their second doses.

The Mayors and Chairs want to thank the thousands of people working on the ongoing vaccination effort and all those who are doing the right thing and getting vaccinated.

“The most recent COVID vaccination numbers are encouraging but for the train to continue forward everyone must continue to do their part. The availability of vaccines is higher than ever before. This means increased availability for first doses and accelerated availability for second doses for those who are eligible. Each vaccination moves us that much closer to a semblance of normal.”
