Hamilton’s downtown area sees service enhancements for business and residents
HAMILTON, ON – Downtown Hamilton will see immediate improvements related to augmented cleanliness, grant enhancements and safety to benefit area residents and businesses.
There are over 1,500 employment locations within the Urban Growth Centre that at times, are subject to vandalism and graffiti, more than any other part of the city. Today, Hamilton City Council unanimously ratified a report providing private commercial property owners and businesses supports in various City wards, including in the downtown (Ward 2) area. Business and property owners will be able to apply online for grants to help with the costs associated with graffiti removal.
Additionally, as of July 13, 2023, the City has undertaken a concentrated effort in litter collection and sidewalk sweeping enhancements in the downtown core. Added service enhancements for street and cycle lane sweeping, weed trimming, debris pickup and graffiti removal are currently in the implementation stage.
Hamilton Police Services also launched their Core Patrol at the end of June, dedicating a team of officers assigned to downtown Hamilton and surrounding neighborhoods with a specialized focus on safety. Core Patrol works to address crime and disorder in the area of the CORE and act as a liaison to the Social Navigator Program, as well as the Rapid Intervention and Support Team to ensure the most vulnerable community members have access to needed supports.
These service enhancements will help ensure Hamilton’s downtown core is a place where people can look forward to living, working and exploring.
Quick Facts:
- Overall, Hamilton attracts 5.9 million visitors annually who spend an estimated $575.8 million

Through grants such as these, we can help business owners in the heart of the city who’ve experienced vandalism and graffiti keep their businesses clean and thriving. With a focus on enhanced cleaning service levels and safety, this is one of the ways in which we can demonstrate that our local businesses matter and that their success is critical to our local economy and tourism sector.
