Installation of new fencing and signage complete at Albion Falls
HAMILTON, ON - August 4, 2017 - Later today, the City of Hamilton will complete the installation of approximately 215 metres of fencing and 30 new warning signs at Albion Falls in an ongoing effort to ensure public safety in the area.
The coming long weekend is a wonderful time to visit any of the 100+ local waterfalls in Hamilton. However, residents are reminded that waterfalls and other edges along the escarpment can be dangerous and should be treated as such.
Visitors to local waterfalls should exercise caution, stay on the marked trails, respect the posted signage and check out the waterfalls from the viewing platforms. Given the recent rainfall, many of Hamilton’s waterfalls will have extra water flowing through them and could be particularly dangerous.
New information about Albion Falls
- New signage has been installed at the bottom of Albion Falls noting “No Access” and “Stay on Marked Trail”.
- Accessing the bottom of Albion Falls will be considered trespassing, and visitors may be charged.
- There is no safe access to the bottom of Albion Falls, and visitors should not enter the water; swimming at the bottom of the falls is prohibited.
- In the coming weeks, a number of new “map signs” will be posted, clearly identifying the locations of parking lots, main trails, viewing platforms, and other safe places to see the falls.
- To date, seven individuals have been charged with trespassing at Albion falls – each ticket was for $135.
The City is also continuing to take measures to reduce traffic and parking-related issues around Hamilton’s waterfall areas with enhanced parking enforcement that will be continued this long weekend. With over 1,000 parking tickets issued since mid-April, illegally parked cars may also be towed. Illegally parked cars may also impede emergency vehicles and crews trying to access waterfall areas if a rescue is required.
The City of Hamilton encourages residents and visitors to enjoy the waterfalls as safely as possible.
“With Hamilton being home to over 100 waterfalls, we welcome residents and visitors to enjoy these areas safely. I am urging the public to be aware of their surroundings and stay only in designated viewing areas." - Mayor Fred Eisenberger
“Staff have been working diligently to install additional safety measures at Albion Falls over the past several weeks.. We ask that visitors continue to use the viewing platforms to get the best view of the falls. Staff have also recently trimmed back and removed parts of some of the trees near the platforms to improve the sightlines to the falls.” - Kara Bunn, Manager of Parks & Cemeteries
