New Fire Apparatus now serving Binbrook and Mount Hope

HAMILTON, ON – On Monday June 10, 2019, two of Hamilton’s volunteer fire stations received new fire apparatus. Station 18 in Binbrook and Station 19 in Mount Hope each received a new rural pumper and a new tanker truck, replacing older vehicles at the stations. As the apparatus were delivered to the stations, volunteer firefighters were joined by Fire Chief David Cunliffe of the Hamilton Fire Department, Brenda Johnson, Ward 11 Councillor and Paul Johnson, General Manager of the City of Hamilton’s Healthy and Safe Communities Department.

Volunteer firefighters provided input into the design of the new trucks, which were specifically designed for use in suburban and rural settings. Firefighting in rural settings typically involves firefighters bringing water to a scene and as such, the new tankers and pumpers have increased water storage capacity. The new rural pumper has a 1,000 gallon (3,800 litre) water tank while the new tanker has a 2,000 gallon (7,600 litre) water tank. The new rural pumper also features design improvements in drafting from a water source such as a pond, pumping capabilities, and includes many new safety features such as improved emergency and scene lighting.

The Hamilton Fire Department replaces fire apparatus every 20 years. This was the first replacement of fire apparatus at Stations 18 and 19 since amalgamation in 2001. Funding for these replacement fire apparatus was approved by Hamilton City Council through the annual capital budget process.
