Residents reminded 2016 Municipal By-Election for Hamilton’s Ward 7 Councillor takes place March 21
Hamilton, ON - March 7, 2016 – Hamilton’s Ward 7 residents are reminded that Monday, March 21 is the 2016 Municipal By-Election for Ward 7 Councillor in the City of Hamilton.
A voter notification card has been mailed to all households with voters whose names appear on the voters’ list. Voters are encouraged to bring this card with them to their voting location and are required to show proof of identity and residence at the voting locations, prior to receiving a ballot. All documents must be originals.
Residents who do not receive a card in the mail and believe they are eligible to vote can check their eligibility online or call the Election Office at 905-546-4365.
When to vote
Voters can vote on Election Day Monday, March 21 from 10 am to 8 pm at their assigned voting location.
Advance Polls are also open Thursday, March 10 from 10 am to 7 pm and Saturday, March 12 from 10 am to 5 pm at Sackville Hill Seniors Centre, 780 Upper Wentworth St., Hamilton.
Who is eligible to vote
Residents are eligible to vote in the Ward 7 By-election if on voting day they are:
- a resident
- the owner or tenants of property within Hamilton’s Ward 7 or the spouse of such a person
- a Canadian citizen
- at least 18 years old
- not prohibited from voting under any law.
Accessible tabulators are available for use by voters with disabilities at all of the Advance Polls and on Election Day at Hill Park Recreation Centre, 305 South Bend Road East, Hamilton.
If a voter is unable to vote on Election Day or at any of the Advance Polls, they can appoint a voting proxy to vote on their behalf. Under Section 44 of the Municipal Elections Act, an elector may act on behalf of one other qualified elector who is not a relative or on behalf of one or more qualified electors who are relatives (ie. parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother, sister, or spouse, of the elector appointed). In the case where an elector is acting on behalf of more than one qualified electors who are relatives, separate proxy forms are required. Both the person appointing the proxy and the proxy voter must be on the voters’ list. An Appointments of Proxy form and instructions on how to complete the form are available at the City Clerk’s Office, City Hall, 71 Main Street West, 1st Floor, Hamilton. The voter appointed as voting proxy is required to present two completed copies of the form and proof of identity in person at the City Clerk’s Office during regular business hours up until 5 pm on Monday March 21, 2016, Election Day. If approved, the Clerk will certify the forms, keep one copy and give the other copy to the person appointed as voting proxy, which they can take to their assigned voting location to receive the proxy ballot. At the voting location, the elector appointed as the voting proxy will be required to take an oral oath attesting that he/she is in fact the appointed elector. Once completed, the elector appointed as the voting proxy will vote on behalf of the elector by whom he/she was appointed.
