Statement by Mayor Eisenberger on the one-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 case in Hamilton

HAMILTON, ON – As we mark the one-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 positive case in our community, flags at all City of Hamilton buildings will be lowered for one week beginning March 11th in honour of those who lost their lives or were seriously affected by the virus. We mourn the passing of each individual and offer our deepest condolences to their families, friends and loved ones.

Upon the discovery of our community’s first COVID-19 positive case one year ago, the City launched our Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), redeployed staff to assist our Public Health teams and collaborated with our provincial and federal partners to ensure our top priority was the health and safety of everyone, particularly our frontline workers.

Over the past twelve months, Hamiltonians have supported one another and shown the true meaning of community. There have been countless stories of compassion, selflessness and innovation. Although the pandemic brought numerous challenges, the kindness of individuals, businesses and groups I witnessed throughout this year makes me proud to have been Mayor during this unprecedented time.

While there is light at the end of the tunnel with the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines, it is important we all continue to do everything it takes to stop the spread of the virus and its variants. Please continue to follow public health measures and stay home as much as possible, limit activity outside the home to essential activities only, wear a mask, wash your hands, keep your distance from others and get tested for COVID-19 if you have any symptoms or are not feeling well.

The majority of Hamiltonians have been doing and continue to do their part during the pandemic. Please know you are making a difference in slowing the spread of the virus and I commend you for your continued diligence. On behalf of my council colleagues, EOC and Public Health teams, thank you. We are in this together, and together we will continue to persevere and overcome this virus.
