Take a fall walk in Ancaster and celebrate Hamilton’s newest public artwork

HAMILTON, ON - The public is invited to join Councilor Lloyd Ferguson, city staff and artist Simon Frank to celebrate the installation of the city’s newest public art work “Landmark,” at the Fieldcote Memorial Park & Museum in Ancaster.

Location: Fieldcote Memorial Park & Museum, 64 Sulphur Springs Rd. Ancaster. (South end of the woodlot)
The site can also be accessed via the Fieldcote walkway adjacent to 219 Wilson Street East, Ancaster.

Remarks will be followed by a reception at the museum and a free tour of the exhibition “From the Ark: 150 years of the Farmer Family in Ancaster”.

Art Work

The work consists of a large section of ash tree trunk cast in metal alloy. It is set on edge and features poetry configured as concentric rings - one side honouring the Farmer family bequest and the cultural heritage of Ancaster; the opposite side the plants and animals of the area. The work serves to connect the human and natural histories of Ancaster in the context of the forest in which it is located.

Frank’s proposal was selected by a volunteer jury from 11 submissions through the City of Hamilton public art process. The jury based its selection on the proposal’s response to the competition themes, appropriateness for the site, artistic excellence, technical feasibility and public consultation results.

The jury report noted that “Frank had a conceptually strong proposal, accessible, contemporary, and poetic.” The artist was awarded $36,000 for the design, fabrication and installation of the work.
