In a unanimous, standing vote, the City of Hamilton passes landmark Protocol for Gender Identity and Gender Expression
HAMILTON, ON, March 8, 2017 - The City of Hamilton today passed the Protocol for Gender Identity and Gender Expression; Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Persons. The City developed a protocol that includes ensuring all individuals have the right to access gender segregated facilities in accordance with their self-identified gender identity.
"The City is committed to providing a safe, respectful and inclusive environment," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger. "We also have a legal and moral responsibility to do so. Maintaining places that are free from discrimination and harassment for everyone in the community and all employees is a priority.”
In accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code, the City recognizes the dignity and worth of every person.
"The protocol provides employees with clear guidelines. It demonstrates not only the City’s commitment to the transgender community, but also our commitment to our strategic priority of having a cultured and diverse city, where inclusivity in not only embraced, but celebrated,” comments Bonnie MacPhail, Human Resources at the City of Hamilton.
