Update #5 on flooding at 235 Rebecca Street, Hamilton
Hamilton, ON – Monday, January 11, 2016 – The City’s Community & Emergency Services Department Operation Centre remains activated to support residents displaced as a result of yesterday’s flooding at Rebecca Street. Crews will continue to assess the damage on floors 1-6 of the building to keep residents updated on the status of their units. Red Cross, building management, emergency services and City staff continue to work together to provide short-term housing needs and supports for impacted residents.
As of Monday, January 11 at 10 am:
- Heat has still not been restored to the building. Crews are working to determine when heat can be restored. Elevators remain out of service.
- Power has been restored to the building on floors seven to 17, with the exception of the hallways.
- 37 residents stayed overnight at Bennetto
- 14 residents stayed at the Admiral Inn to accommodate residents with specific medical needs
- Hamilton Fire prevention inspectors are on site this morning working with the building owner to ensure all safety systems are restored.
- Good Shepherd continues to provide meal service to displaced residents including providing boxed lunches for children as they attend school today
Background: Flooding at an apartment building on Rebecca Street displaced approximately 400 residents early yesterday morning when a pipe burst and flooded the lower six floors of the 17-storey building.
