Update: Down-Bound Lanes of Claremont Escarpment Access to Remain Closed Until Late February
HAMILTON, ON – December 19, 2016 – In the interest of public safety, the down-bound lanes of the Claremont escarpment access will remain closed until late February while the City of Hamilton completes necessary remedial work.
Initial plans to convert one of the Claremont’s existing up-bound lanes to allow for down-bound traffic have been cancelled due to concerns that they could cause further traffic congestion for the afternoon rush hour. To date, adjustments made to traffic signals have significantly reduced backlogs and staff will continue to monitor the area and make changes to improve traffic timing throughout the duration of the closure.
The closure of the down-bound lanes will accommodate the necessary short-term remedial work. Additional closures may be planned for the spring when the ground thaws.
“I have seen tremendous patience and understanding from our community,” said Mayor Fred Eisenberger. “I want to thank motorists for their cooperation as we work to ensure continued public safety along our escarpment accesses.”
The northbound (down-bound) lanes will remain closed from Upper James at Inverness Avenue through to Victoria Ave until late February.
