What will you do in the dark for Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is this Saturday, March 19 from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m. For one hour, cities around the world will turn off their non-essential lights for Earth Hour to raise awareness about climate change.
The City of Hamilton is teaming up with Horizon Utilities again this year to support Earth Hour, a global campaign that began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia to take action against climate change.
Many Earth Hour participants turn off their lights and enjoy a device-free night, powering down all non-essential electronics and appliances. Some families take advantage of the hour to go for a walk or play board games by candlelight.
In support of Earth Hour, the City will:
- Turn off all unnecessary lighting in corporate facilities
- Turn off all unnecessary decorative downtown tree lighting
- Street lighting will remain operational for safety reasons.
Horizon Utilities takes its commitment to sustainability seriously and will be doing their part on Saturday evening by implementing energy-saving measures in their facilities, including turning off all non-essential equipment and lighting.
“Participating in Earth Hour is a wonderful catalyst to make little changes going forward to contribute to a greener world,” notes Mayor Fred Eisenberger. “There are a number of ways to show a commitment to energy conservation every day. I encourage everyone to change one activity and make a positive impact.”
Share your Earth Hour plans and activities in the dark on social media feeds and show the world Hamilton’s support using #earthhour and #HamOnt. Together we can make a difference during Earth Hour.
